They sound kind of sinister, but hot chocolate bombs are loads of fun. Both fascinating and yummy, these delicious treats will delight people both young and old.
Origins of The Hot Chocolate Bomb
While hot chocolate bombs’ popularity skyrocketed during the second half of 2020 due largely to the love of them on Tik Tok, a form of them has actually been around long before that. I was introduced to the precursor of the current takes on hot chocolate bombs in the form of a hot chocolate bomb snowman during Christmas of 2018. My mother-in-law hosted a Christmas gathering where she unveiled a delightful purchase from a Kate Weiser Chocolate in Dallas. She gathered us all around to watch Mr. Snowman melt and “explode” in a pan of milk making a delicious hot chocolate with marshmallows.
I remember thinking the whole meltdown was both captivating and ingenious. Flash forward until today and hot chocolate bombs have been crowned as a viral social media sensation.
What Exactly Is This Sweet Beverage Treat?
A hot chocolate bomb comes, most often, in a circular shape or series of those such as the snowmen. Some bakers have branched out to include squares, hearts, and other fun shapes. Delicious treats such as cocoa powder, hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, and chocolate chips are placed inside an outer chocolate shell that unleashes its contents when it starts to melt.
Where Can I Buy Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Amazon offers a selection of these delicious treats, along with online outlets such as Etsy and Walmart.com. A quick phone call to your favorite local bakery or specialty shop may help you locate them, as well.
