Job fairs can provide great opportunities to network face-to-face with human resources decision-makers and learn about available job openings. Preparation, including bringing the right things with you to job fairs, is key to your success at these events. The following are four tips on what to have with you when you hit the entrance at the job fair.
1. Professional attire that shows you mean business. Conservative suits, dresses, and very nice blouse/slacks combinations are what’s called for. Blue jeans, t-shirts, shorts, and house shoes, not so much. For more in-depth information on this topic, check out 5 Tips for Best Job Interview Outfit.
2.A concise, proofread resume on nice paper. Generally, a one page resume is very appropriate for job fairs to provide the employer an overview of your qualifications without overwhelming. He or she will likely have a stack of resumes to go through when back at the office. Make yours stand out by following Four Tips for a Great Resume.
3.A notepad in notepad holder and pen. Do some research ahead of time on the companies that are going to be at the employment fair. Jot down some notes that you can refer to as you prepare to approach the individual employers. Also, make yourself a list of questions to ask. People take notice of job candidates who care enough to do their homework and know something about the businesses.
Very nice, but reasonably priced, notepad holders can be found at the major office supply stores. Look for ones with a side-pocket in which you can store business cards that you ask for from employers that you speak with at the job fair.
4.A mind prepared for common interview questions. While speaking with company representatives at the fair, you will most likely be asked some common job interview questions. Prepare yourself ahead of time to answer these questions smartly and without hesitation. All this takes is some practice and a reliance on resources such as Five Common Job Interview Questions to guide you in developing your own appropriate answers.
By following these four easy steps when participating in job fairs, you will stand out from the multitude of individuals that arrive unprepared and unimpressive.

This is great advice! I’m sure I could have used this when I was trying to get my first job out of college since I was completely clueless.
I was pretty clueless coming out of college as well.
These are definitely some great tips. The company I worked for right out of college had someone at a fair or open space event I should say when I was in my senior year and I had an on the spot pre-interview. I ended up working there for almost 4 years. I left right before I had my son to become a stay at home wife and momma. Thanks for sharing these tips with us at Countdown in Style!
