An easy way to save money is to purchase products that can be used multiple ways. Mason jars are a great example of such a money-saving item. In addition to the familiar use of mason jars for all types of canning, you may want to consider putting them to work the following ways:
- Inexpensive centerpieces Fill one half to three-fourths of jar with rice, beans, water, or other not very flammable items and nestle a votive on top. Just be sure not to leave lit votives in centerpieces unattended.
- Storage Mason jars make great holders for q-tips, cotton balls, paperclips, buttons and much more.
- Cups Mason jars are favorite pieces of kitchen ware for many of us in the deep south, especially during the summer.
- Flower Vases Because of the variety of sizes that mason jars come in, they make for stellar flower vases for lots of sizes of bouquets.
- Soap Dispenser Sheknows offers a nice tutorial on converting your mason jar to a nice soap holder.
- Gifts Pinterest offers lots of ideas. Some of my favorites are Jac o’lyn Murphy’s Movie Munchie Gift Basket, A Cozy Kitchen’s Buttermilk Chocolate Pancake Mix , and A Beautiful Mess’s Trail Mix Favors.
- Outdoor Event Lighting From candles to Christmas tree lights stuff in a jar, mason lights can make for a great way to illuminate your outdoor activities.
- Food Storage Other Than Canning Check out Wit & Whistle blog’s instructions on chalkboard paint tops for your food storage mason jars.
- Holiday Decor From wrapping up your jars with gauze to make mummies to glitterfying them, the possibilities are endless.
- Display Pieces for the Home For an inexpensive, modern version of a shadow box, put the sand and shells from the beach vacation in a jar that can easily be displayed on a bookshelf or mantle.

Fun ideas. As part of a nighttime parade for her high school, my daughter used mason jars for lanterns. They filled each one with water and dropped a lit but unfolded glow bracelet into it. The water amplified the glow. They were really pretty and super cheap. An awesome addition to the float.
