What a wonderful thing we can do to get them off on the right foot! Let’s teach our teens these 6 Crucial Money Skills before they leave the nest.

6 Crucial Money Skills To Teach Teens Before They Leave Home

1. The Ins And Outs Of Checking And Savings Accounts

Go with your teen to the bank and help them set up a checking and savings account. You will probably have to co-sign, but this will enable you to have access to guide your teen in smart account management. Through this process you can:

  • Teach him or her how to write checks.
  • Show how to use an ATM/Debit Card and to balance a checkbook. Explain that an ATM card is for drawing money from an ATM machine (preferably own bank to avoid fees). A debit card is for paying a merchant with money already in the checking account.

Make sure that your teen knows that if the debit card ever gets lost or stolen to report it to the bank immediately. After only a few days, debit card holder financial liability can go up to  $500. Even more, down the road if not reported.

  • Explain how savings accounts allow for saving money now for use down the road.

2. The Value of Time When It Comes to Interest

Your teen may be surprised to learn that banks and some other institutions will pay a percentage (or part thereof) of the money that he or she places in savings back for allowing the bank “use” of that deposited money. And when your kiddo lets that interest earned stay in savings, he or she will start earning interest on that interest (compound interest).

Over time, this compounding can really add up.  Let them try out the Compound Interest Calculator at Investor.gov to see this principle in action with some real numbers.

3. How Credit Cards Work

Having watched parents do it, it young adults think it is so easy to whip out a piece of plastic and pay for something. What is crucial for a teen to understand, though, is that when you do that you are borrowing money. If the money borrowed is not paid back within a month, then the borrower gets to pay interest to the credit card company. And if a payment is not received on time, significant late fees will be tacked on.

Young adults will first be eligible for a credit card at the age of 18. Due to lack of credit history, the first card will generally be a card secured with a monetary deposit and/or have a low credit limit. These restrictions are not bad things as they allow young people have some financial boundaries to start out with.

4. The Steps To Put Together A Budget

How do you know what you have to save and spend if you do not know what your income and expenses are? Help your teen sit down and figure out what money is coming in each month vs. what money is being paid out. Take what is left and help him or her decide what to save and what to spend. If your teen is in the negative each month or just barely scrapping by, it is time to either look at reducing expenses or bringing in more income.

5. What Is Meant By Gross Vs. Take Home Pay

I vividly remember all those years ago, being so excited to get my first paycheck. That is until I actually saw it. What I didn’t realize at the time was that making $5 dollars an hour did not mean that I was going to actually get those five dollars. By the time federal and state, Social Security, and Medicare taxes were taken out, I was left with quite a bit less than that. To keep your kid’s first paycheck from being a real shocker, show them this Sample Paycheck from TheMint.org.

6. The Importance Of An Emergency Fund.

Life does indeed happen when we least expect it. You can be rocking along and all of a sudden, “kaboom”. You get a nail in the sidewall of your car tire and have to buy a new one. You break a tooth, leading to a costly visit to the dentist, etc… Life definitely warrants an emergency fund so that you do not have to make your financial pain worse by having to borrow money.

By helping teens learn these 6 Crucial Money Skills before they leave the nest, they will be much better prepared for heading out into the blue yonder.

What if you could find clear guidance for What To Save To Pinterest And When? Guidance that involves some simple steps and smart use of free resources available to you. You have come to the right place! Check out these 5 Powerful Pin Placement Tips.

5 Awesome Tips What to Save to Pinterest When

1. Learn What Your Audience Wants Most

Do you have a Pinterest Business Account? If not, definitely hop on getting one. If you have a personal Pinterest account, simply apply to convert it to a business account. Or if you are starting from scratch, follow some simple steps through Pinterest help and you will be on your way.

Once you have Pinterest Business Account, you will receive access to Pinterest Analytics. This information goldmine contains the secrets to what topics your followers care about most. Two sections are of critical importance to your pin saving strategy.

First, go to “Interests” found under “People You Reach”. In that section, you will see the primary subjects that your audience is seeking information about. If you are new to Pinterest, you will need to build a base of at least several hundred followers before this feature will give you a truly good read of subject interest.

Once you learn about major interest areas, you can build matching boards. For example, based on one of my audience interests, I built a board centered around Home Improvement that rose to be my most popular board within a year’s time.

Second, go to “Click” found under “Your Pinterest Profile”.  That section offers a look at the most clicked pins, and, boards with the most clicked pins from the past 30 days. By checking out this intel, you will get a drilled down look at pin topics that truly resonant with followers.

2. Know A Quality Pin When You See It

The pins that resonant with followers on Pinterest generally have the traits below in addition to being in an interest area. They are:

  • Rich pins-These pins show extra information to the viewer that standard pins do not. (Available to Pinterest Business Account users.).
  • High Picture Quality-Fuzzy, poorly lit photos just will not cut it.
  • Vertical Images-Horizontal and small pins are way past their time. Although recommendations about exact length dimensions vary widely, max width is 736 pixels. According to PicMonkey, the max height before mobile starts cutting off the image is under 2,061 pixes. And these days, pushing height to the limit is becoming more and more popular and effective.
  • Visually Descriptive or Feature Text-The pins that win are the ones that illustrate in picture and/or text what they are about quickly and eye-pleasingly.

3. Understand The Seasonal Cycles of Pinterest

Pinterest is much like any major craft store. Much of the merchandise runs at least a season ahead (sometimes multiple seasons) of the actual time of year. For example, it is still summer, but Fall/Festival Halloween Crafts are popping up everywhere on Pinterest feeds. Forward looking is the name of the pin game. Be sure and grab my pin guide with Free Printable cheat sheets for each month of the year to take the guess work out of your pin saving strategy.

4. Stay Informed About What Is Trending

On top of predictable pin topic patterns triggered by time of the year, current cultural trends also dictate what to save to Pinterest and when. Insights found at sites such as Pinterest’s blog Oh, How Pinteresting! and Trend Hunter, can be invaluable in identifying what is hot.

5. Engage The Help Of A Pin Scheduler.

I will admit, I resisted a scheduler for way too long. Thinking I could do it all on my own, I finally realized the error of my ways. Since using Tailwind, I have seen my follower numbers climb much more quickly and my audience’s overall engagement rise steadily.

A scheduler takes the guess work out of the best times of day to pin and automates the process. It frees you up to schedule pins in blocks ahead of time rather than always be scrambling to keep up.

And you still have the freedom to manually pin when you see fit.

By making use of the best research and guidance available regarding pin strategy, you will soon master the art of what to save to Pinterest when. And your follower numbers and engagement will reflect your new found wisdom.

5 Don't Miss Tips for Camping in Rain

(Disclosure: Please note that this post contains affiliate links. If you click one of the links and make a purchase, we may receive a small commission that will help support this blog. Thanks so much.)

1. Start With Packing Smart

By protecting your clothes and gear from rain whether or not it is forecast, you put yourself in a good position out of the gate. We all know how the weather can turn on a dime.

  • First, put your belongings in a bag(s) with at least some built in water resistance. A variety of such duffel and gear bags are available to choose from.
  • Then, line the inside of your bag with a garbage bag for added protection.
  • Third, place whatever you put inside the duffel (especially clothes) in large ziploc bags or dry sacks.

I know that multiple layers of water resistance may seem like overkill, but trust me, water can and does get into places that you never dreamed. Nothing like having to wear soggy underwear or socks.

2. Be Vigilant In Monitoring The Weather

Know the weather before you go, so you don’t time your unpacking in the midst of a torrential downpour. Also, stay informed at the campsite where cell service allows. Some weather apps to consider include WeatherBug®, AccuWeather, and NOAA Radar Pro for Apple.

3. Bring Along Weather Gear For When You Find Yourself Camping In Rain

Camping in rain can be quite manageable when you bring the proper gear. Items to keep with you on your camping trips include:

  • Lightweight, Easily Folded Ponchos (Consider an Ultra Lite Rain Suit and Joy Walker Backpack Rain Cover if will be hiking along with camping.
  • A good pair of rain boots for tromping around the campsite.
  • Moisture wicking clothes to pull the wet away from your skin should you get a soaking. Not straight cotton! Cotton fabric will absorb and hold moisture like a sponge.

4. Use Caution When Picking Your Campsite

Look for a campsite that is on level, flat ground. Do not camp in a site that lies in a dip or depression, or on the downward side of a slope. These types of locations tend to collect rainwater or allow rainwater to flow through causing greater potential for water in tents.

Also, try to camp at least 200 ft from any flowing body of water. It is amazing how quickly a small stream can turn into a raging river given the right rainfall conditions. Also, water attracts wildlife, who may take a liking to your tent if it is situated in the vicinity. Your safety is definitely worth seeking out a more suitable campsite.

5. Whip Out The Rain Flys And Tarps If Rain Is Coming

Many tents either come with attachable rain flys or they are available as added accessories. The flys provide a water resistant layer to go over your tent to help prevent water from seeping into it. Just be sure to follow the tent manufacturer’s directions on how to correctly attach.

Another vital item for rainy situations is a tarp. A well-placed tarp can provide extra protection for your tent, as well as, be used over an outdoor cooking area or gathering place. Check out this great step-by-step guide to tarp setup from REI Co-op Journal.

By following these 5 Valuable Tips for Camping in Rain, you can make the most out of your camp out no matter the conditions.

14 Frugal Borax Free Slime Recipes

(Please note: You should always do your own due diligence in checking out slime recipe ingredients. You are most aware of ingredient sensitivities of family members.

Also, you will notice that I have not included any edible slime recipes in this roundup. I feel that if there is too great a possibility for younger children to become confused about which slime they can and cannot eat. Not to mention, potential germ/hygiene issues of playing with slime and then consuming it.)

Are you like me? When you go cloth shopping with your kids you face frustration. The “average size” clothes are too big or too small for your kiddos. Your young’uns are always in jeopardy of accidentally dropping their drawers or being forced to do contortions to fit into their jeans. If I am speaking your language, adjustable waistbands are an invention that is sure to rank high on your list.

Now, if you just knew where to find reasonably priced versions of these shape shifting clothes. Look no more. Check out these 7 Places to Find Budget-Friendly Adjustable Waist Clothes for Kids.

The Top Contenders for Adjustable Waist Clothes

  1. JcPenney-This store is number one on my list because the adjustable waistband clothes that you find here are almost always of quality, durable construction. The elastic does what it should and the button fasteners do not come flying off with first use. I am particularly fond of the Arizona Brand jeans which the store often runs sales on.
  2. The Children’s Place-You will find that this retailer carries a pretty wide range of bottoms (jeans, slacks, shorts, and sometimes skirts) with adjustable waist tabs or elasticized waists. Coupons and rewards are generally available from this children’s clothier.
  3. Sears-I have found adjustable waist uniform pants and shorts for kids here. Because the chain as a whole is on the wain, people often overlook Sears. Don’t make the same mistake. They may not have the biggest selection in the world, but they do offer quality in adjustable apparel.
  4. TargetThis on trend retailer does not offer a substantial amount of adjustable waist clothes for kids, but they do feature drawstrings on many of their pants and shorts. Although, mom and dad may have to help with getting those drawstrings tied just right, this can be a great option for exercise clothes especially.

These 4 chain retailers are my top stops when in search of adjustable waist clothes for kids.

Online and DIY Adjustable Waist Clothes For Kids Sources

When it comes to adjustable waistband clothes, it is generally best to shop where your kids can try on the clothes for overall fit. Sometimes that is simply not possible though. When that is the case, I recommend turning to:

5. AmazonThe online giant carries a limited selection of adjustable waist clothes for kids. And if you have an Amazon Prime Membership or try an Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trialtwo day shipping is available without cost.

6. Land’s End-You will find a limited selection of adjustable waist bottoms to order. You can count on the quality being excellent and purchases are backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

7. At the Business End of the Sewing Machine-If the above options fail and you are particularly skilled with thread and needle,  you can sew an adjustable waistband into kids’ pants and shorts (If you have a toddler, try the highly-rated Dapper Snapper instead). Check out Jenn at Frugal Upstate’s tutorial for putting your own Buttonhole Elastic Band in your kids’ clothes.

By knowing where to shop and keeping  a DIY solution in your back pocket, your days of frustration in finding adjustable waist clothing for kids are over.
