Looking for some great fall fun? An opportunity to get in the outdoors and relax without spending wads of cash? Then, make sure to check out these 6 Tips For Frugal Fall Camping.

6 Tips for Frugal Fall Camping

1. Keep your eyes peeled for off season campsite specials-

Fall starts the low season for camping in many locals. The kids are back in school. Vacations are waning until the holidays. And temperatures and hours of daylight are starting to being a downward trend.

If the campsite is not in a prime leaf watching local or near a major year-round attraction, the occupancy rate will have cooled off, too. Some campsite owners offer discounts to keep people coming. Do a Google search and see what bargains are to be had.

Want to explore the range of camping opportunities that are available near you? Take a look at Where To Find Camping Near You.

2. Snag Camping Gear Through Final Summer And Back To School Clearance Sales-

The big box retailers, especially, offer big markdowns on outdoor gear and back to school items to make way for holiday merchandise. Seek out bargain prices on items that you need such as:

  • Backpacks
  • Ice packs
  • Coolers
  • Tents
  • Cots
  • Sun blocking apparel
  • Sun screen lotion
  • Bug spray
  • Citronella candles
  • Travel pillows
  • Outdoor tableclothes
  • Camping chairs
  • Beach towels
  • Picnic caddies
  • Outdoor folding tables
  • Portable propane grills
  • Grilling Tools
  • Outdoor Games such as bean bags, washer toss, horseshoes, spikeball, and ladderball.
  • Duffel bags
  • Lighter weight sleeping bags
  • Water bottles
  • Blow up mattresses
  • Pop up canopies
  • Travel first aid kits

3. Take Advantage of Hunting Season Sales-

Many outdoor stores offer specials on hunting gear in the fall. Some of the hunting merchandise is also handy for camping. For example:

  • Rain boots
  • Rain coats
  • Rain suits
  • Lined jackets
  • Long underwear
  • Ear Muffs
  • Knit Caps
  • Headlamps
  • Freeze Dried Food

4. Use Halloween Candy Discounts To Your Advantage For Frugal Fall Camping

In the fall, retailers roll out the candy in preparation for fall festivals and Halloween festivities. Then, they offer specials to draw people into stores. On top of that, manufacturers offer coupons to entice  people to buy their brands. Let the price and product competition work to your advantage and stock up on chocolate bars, marshmallows, chocolate chips for trail mix, and all the other ingredients you need for sweet camping treats.

5.  Cooler Weather Means Soup On The Menu

Soup is one of those awesome grocery money stretcher meals. You can make it with an endless variety of ingredients and it is tummy filling. Best of all many types of soup can be made quickly at the campsite or frozen ahead, properly stored, and reheated at the campsite (keeping in mind food safety). Add a little skillet cornbread as a side and you are in business.

6. Come Prepared So You Don’t Have To Run Out And Make Costly Purchases On the Fly

Layering is the name of the game when it comes to fall camping. Weather conditions can change quickly and vary greatly. Bring layers of clothes that you can easily take on an off.

Also, in addition to your sleeping bag, you may want to bring along a blanket(s) that you can add or remove as needed for comfortable sleeping.

The last thing that you want on a campout is to find yourself without gear that you need and have to make a run to whatever store you can find. That is if you are near a store that would carry what you need.

By doing some savvy prep, your frugal fall camping adventures will succeed. And speaking of savvy, don’t miss my free guide to 50 Clever Ways to Save Money Online with load of clickable links.

Make Sure That You Are Using Meal Plan To The Fullest

If you choose to purchase a meal plan at your school or are required to, get the maximum benefit out of it. For example, if you are entitled to 15 meals per week on the meal plan, be sure to show up for all 15. Many schools are now offering the flexibility as part of the meal plans to take food-to-go, eat brunch and late night meals, and make purchases at on campus mini-markets.

Go Homemade When You Can

Preparing your own meals can be the most economical way to go when you have a microwave or kitchen available to you. One of my all time college favorites was a mug of soup and some crackers. Check out this article from Buzzfeed with 23 Dorm Room Meals You Can Make in a Microwave. And 22 Healthy College Recipes You Can Make In Your Dorm Room from Greatist. For students, with a full kitchen available, the possibilities are endless.

Several items that make college meal and snack prep easier include:

A portable, microwaveable soup mug such as this one from the Sistema To Go Collection.

And this HOTPOP Collapsible Microwave Popcorn Popper Bowl with Handles.

Be Smart With Your Shopping

If you regularly shop at a particular grocery store, sign up for a store loyalty card. The card enable you to receive exclusive discounts and, in many cases, load manufacturers and grocery chain coupons to your card to be scanned at checkout.

To find digital coupons, go to:

  • Your grocery chain’s website. Often links to download the store and manufacturer coupons are housed there.
  • SavingStar® where you can use savings offers and receive cash directed back into a SavingStar account.
  • Cellfire®  which allows you to download offers to store loyalty cards and mobile devices. You then redeem at checkout.
  • Coupons.com where online coupons are available to download to a select number of store loyalty cards. Coupons.com also offers a large selection of printable coupons.

Additionally, if you shop at Target, download the Target Cartwheel app for easy savings. If you frequent Walmart, check out the Savings Catcher app. Scan your receipt and if Walmart finds lower local competitor prices, you receive the difference back through a Walmart eGift Card.

Form A Pot Luck Supper Group

Get together with a group of friends and each bring a dish for a meal. Not only do you get to hang out with your buddies, but also get to enjoy a meal for much less money than if you had to buy all the ingredients yourself.

Take Advantage Of Student Discounts At Restaurants

A variety of restaurants offer discounts to college students when you show your student ID. National chains such as Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, Dairy Queen, and Waffle House are well-known for offering special savings to students looking to save money on food. Check with these and other food establishments near your campus to see what savings may be available to you.

As you can see, a little ingenuity can go a long way in helping you stretch your dollars as a college student and save money on food.

Are you or a loved one considering a no money down home loan? Before you go any further, take a look at these 3 Good Reasons to Avoid No Money Down Home Loans.

3 Reasons To Avoid No Money Down Home Loans

1. If You Have No Money For Down Payment, What Happens If Emergency?

If you are in the market for a no money down home loan because you have no cash saved up to put towards a home purchase, you are putting yourself in a vulnerable position. Do you have the money to cover unexpected moving costs, utility deposits, taxes, etc..? Financially, much more is involved in setting up a new house than just taking out a home loan.

And what happens if you purchase a home using no money down and three months later disaster strikes? Something major breaks in the home that is not covered by insurance.

You had no money to put towards the house to start with so where is money going to come from for repairs? Looks like you will have to take on even more debt. This cycle just might spiral out of control quickly.

Where no money is the reason for no down payment, continue renting and build a down payment and emergency fund.

2. If Considering No Money Down Home Loans Because Think Money Better Invested Elsewhere

I made a similar mistake one time. I thought our money could earn a greater return elsewhere than tied up in a mortgage. Also, I feared putting that much money in one place.

I convinced my husband to put down a smaller down payment than we could have afforded. Unfortunately this strategy did not payoff.

First, I did not realize that when you start making mortgage payments, the majority of the payment go towards interest. Over time the amount of principal paid with each payment will gradually increase with the interest portion gradually decreasing. This process takes time though, especially when no or little money is put down.

Second, I did not count on Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) eating our lunch. When you make a down payment of less than 20 percent with many types of home loans, you are required to pay this insurance.

PMI protects the lender should you stop making payments on your loan. VA loans are one of the few types of loans that do not require PMI, but we did not have one of those.

Lesson learned. If you have enough money to make a larger down payment and still have a comfortable emergency fund, do so. The “Better Invested Elsewhere” plan has substantial pitfalls.

3.What Happens If Home Prices Decline And You Gotta Sell?

As mentioned above, when you have a 100% loan, for a significant amount of time your mortgage payments will mostly be going to cover interest. Only a small portion will go towards your principal balance.

If for some reason you get in a situation where you have to sell your home for less than you paid for it, you may owe a big lump sum payment to your home lender. You will need to pay this before you can be released from your loan.

If you cannot come up with the money, you may be forced into options that seriously damage your credit for years to come.

The three reasons above show why it is best to take a pass on those no money down home loans no matter how tempting they seem.

What a wonderful thing we can do to get them off on the right foot! Let’s teach our teens these 6 Crucial Money Skills before they leave the nest.

6 Crucial Money Skills To Teach Teens Before They Leave Home

1. The Ins And Outs Of Checking And Savings Accounts

Go with your teen to the bank and help them set up a checking and savings account. You will probably have to co-sign, but this will enable you to have access to guide your teen in smart account management. Through this process you can:

  • Teach him or her how to write checks.
  • Show how to use an ATM/Debit Card and to balance a checkbook. Explain that an ATM card is for drawing money from an ATM machine (preferably own bank to avoid fees). A debit card is for paying a merchant with money already in the checking account.

Make sure that your teen knows that if the debit card ever gets lost or stolen to report it to the bank immediately. After only a few days, debit card holder financial liability can go up to  $500. Even more, down the road if not reported.

  • Explain how savings accounts allow for saving money now for use down the road.

2. The Value of Time When It Comes to Interest

Your teen may be surprised to learn that banks and some other institutions will pay a percentage (or part thereof) of the money that he or she places in savings back for allowing the bank “use” of that deposited money. And when your kiddo lets that interest earned stay in savings, he or she will start earning interest on that interest (compound interest).

Over time, this compounding can really add up.  Let them try out the Compound Interest Calculator at Investor.gov to see this principle in action with some real numbers.

3. How Credit Cards Work

Having watched parents do it, it young adults think it is so easy to whip out a piece of plastic and pay for something. What is crucial for a teen to understand, though, is that when you do that you are borrowing money. If the money borrowed is not paid back within a month, then the borrower gets to pay interest to the credit card company. And if a payment is not received on time, significant late fees will be tacked on.

Young adults will first be eligible for a credit card at the age of 18. Due to lack of credit history, the first card will generally be a card secured with a monetary deposit and/or have a low credit limit. These restrictions are not bad things as they allow young people have some financial boundaries to start out with.

4. The Steps To Put Together A Budget

How do you know what you have to save and spend if you do not know what your income and expenses are? Help your teen sit down and figure out what money is coming in each month vs. what money is being paid out. Take what is left and help him or her decide what to save and what to spend. If your teen is in the negative each month or just barely scrapping by, it is time to either look at reducing expenses or bringing in more income.

5. What Is Meant By Gross Vs. Take Home Pay

I vividly remember all those years ago, being so excited to get my first paycheck. That is until I actually saw it. What I didn’t realize at the time was that making $5 dollars an hour did not mean that I was going to actually get those five dollars. By the time federal and state, Social Security, and Medicare taxes were taken out, I was left with quite a bit less than that. To keep your kid’s first paycheck from being a real shocker, show them this Sample Paycheck from TheMint.org.

6. The Importance Of An Emergency Fund.

Life does indeed happen when we least expect it. You can be rocking along and all of a sudden, “kaboom”. You get a nail in the sidewall of your car tire and have to buy a new one. You break a tooth, leading to a costly visit to the dentist, etc… Life definitely warrants an emergency fund so that you do not have to make your financial pain worse by having to borrow money.

By helping teens learn these 6 Crucial Money Skills before they leave the nest, they will be much better prepared for heading out into the blue yonder.
